‘Upgrade’ your phone with an iPhone-style notch using this app

The Essential Phone has a different take on bezel-less design than the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and LG V30. The device features a notch on top that houses the camera, with the screen wrapping around it. Apple took things to a new level with the iPhone X, which features an even larger notch where in addition to the camera you’ll also find the speaker and a few other things.

Developer Damian Piwowarski decided it would be fun to bring the notch to other Android devices as well, so he created an app called Smartphone upgrader 2017. It’s extremely simple, as all it does is add a notch on top of your screen as well as rounded corners to make your smartphone look like the Essential Phone or the new iPhone. You also have the option of changing the size of the notch to make the whole thing look as pretty as possible. Check out what the end result looks like below.

Of course, the app isn’t the most useful thing in the world, and you might delete it after a few minutes. But it’s fun to try out and can be quite entertaining thanks to the remix of the song What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes that starts playing as soon as the transformation is complete.

T-Mobile unlimited throttling limit is now 50 GB per month

For those of you on T-Mobile’s unlimited plan, we bring you good news: the self-proclaimed Un-carrier is increasing its “fair usage threshold” or throttling limit from 32 GB to 50 GB starting later this week.

T-Mobile ONE family plans now include free Netflix (Update: now live!)

The magenta network has been very generous in its customer appreciation programs, giving out free movie tickets, ice cream, high-end phones, and even luxury vacation packages. In fact, it once gave away so much free pizza that it quite literally broke Domino’s. T-Mobile recently caused a stir once again by offering free Netflix to T-Mobile ONE customers on a family plan.

Well, free Netflix subscriptions mean increased data consumption, so naturally, the Un-carrier has decided to increase its unlimited throttling limit to 50 GB. While details are scarce, from what looks to be a leaked internal document, T-Mobile will be increasing its “fair usage threshold” – just a euphemism for data throttling limit – from 32 GB to 50 GB, starting September 20.

If you were unaware, just like all other major US carriers, T-Mobile throttles your network speed once you reach a certain threshold even if you are on one of its unlimited plans. That limit used to be 23 GB, which eventually went up to 32 GB, and now, you have an extra 18 GB until you have to worry about slowed network speeds. While 50 GB is still not truly unlimited, it’s good to see that T-Mobile is continuing to be a disruptive force in the US telecommunications industry. After all, it’s been a leading player in rendering two-year contracts obsolete in the US and in pushing for affordable unlimited plans. And according to OpenSignal’s bi-annual speed report, T-Mobile now has the fastest LTE download speed in the US out of all four major carriers.

It’s good to see that T-Mobile is continuing to be a disruptive force in the US telecommunications industry.

Pressing a phone number or email address in Gmail or Inbox now opens the corresponding app

As weird as it might sound, I did not give much attention to the fact that emails I receive in Gmail did not parse out information like phone numbers and email addresses. I just took it for granted that copying and pasting was the route to go. Now that Google updated Gmail and Inbox  to make that information actionable, however, things look to be more convenient for me with future emails.

As previously mentioned, Gmail and Inbox now turn phone numbers, physical addresses, and email addresses into hyperlinks that take you to the appropriate app. For example, pressing on a phone number takes you to your default dialer, pressing on a physical address takes you to Google Maps, and pressing on an email address opens your default email client.

According to Google, it turns this information into hyperlinks in order to make your time more productive:

Precious time can be lost by having to copy and paste this information from an email into other apps and websites, so we wanted to provide a better way to perform these tasks that also saves time.

If the feature sounds familiar, that is because Android Oreo incorporates a similar feature that takes advantage of machine learning, but it requires the update to Oreo. With this, folks who use Gmail and Inbox across different Android versions can take advantage of it.

The Moto G4 Plus will get Android Oreo after all

Motorola has taken to its blog to share news about the Android Oreo update for the Moto G4 Plus. An issue popped when Motorola published the list of phones it planned to upgrade and there was no mention of the Moto G4 Plus. Owners were promised upgrades to both Android N and O in promotional material and were understandably pretty annoyed. Motorola has removed any mention of Android O from the G4 Plus’ page, but it seems like it’ll be updated anyway.

Added at the end of its blog post is the following statement:

gps location of mobile number

Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info.

Motorola is claiming that the inclusion of Android O was a mistake, but it’s going to update it anyway. This is a fantastic move by Motorola. Even if it’ll take longer for the G4 Plus to be updated than its siblings, an update is coming and that’s a win. While many don’t expect multiple years of software updates for cheaper devices, it’s rare to actually hear a manufacturer say that.

Huawei Pay might cross the Atlantic and make its way to the US

It’s been a year since Huawei announced its own mobile payment service that crosses paths with the likes of Samsung Pay, Android Pay, and others, but it has remained a China-exclusive service since the announcement. News hit the wire that this could change with a launch in Europe, and now we’re learning the same could happen in the US in the near future.

Huawei filed a patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and though the application was accepted, it has not yet been examined. According to the language used in the application page for Huawei Pay, the USPTO has up to three months to investigate, which means we could see the mobile payment service launch by year’s end.

There are a few possibilities here, the first being that Huawei could launch its mobile payment service alongside a certain AI-centric smartphone that could eventually make its way to the US. This hinges on when the Mate 10 will launch in the country, and if the Mate 9’s US availability is any baseline, that launch could happen in early 2018.

There also exists the possibility that Huawei Pay for the US could be announced on its own, but given Huawei’s relative lack of presence in the market, it might be smarter to have the mobile payment service launch alongside some hardware.

Listen to the Mi MIX 2’s designer talk about Xiaomi’s new bezel-less phone

Xiaomi has just released a new video featuring both Industrial Designer Philippe Starck and CEO Lei Jun talking about the brand new Mi MIX 2. Starck is a world-famous designer and has worked on everything from Steve Jobs’ yacht to furniture and more. Starck also designed the first Mi MIX, which was a viral sensation and kicked off the bezel-less trend we see taking over the market today.

And now, Xiaomi is back again with another beautiful device. A common theme in the video is Jade, the ornamental rock that is heavily featured in Asian art. Xiaomi is using a unibody ceramic casing for the Mi MIX 2 to give it the cool, calm, quiet feeling akin to Jade. Last year’s Mi MIX featured a similar ceramic design, but the Mi MIX 2 improves on that design by featuring a full ceramic unibody casing.

One of the key points that Starck and Jun push in the video is perfection. Xiaomi took the time and effort to make what it thinks is the perfect device. According to them, it has the perfect body, a perfect aspect ratio, and removing something as small as a 0.1 mm seam makes all the difference. “It’s just magic.”

We recently spent some hands-on time with the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2. We noted in our initial hands-on article that Xiaomi’s decision to shrink the size of the display and overall footprint made it easier to handle. Due to the smaller size, the phone lacks a headphone jack and the battery size drops from 4,400 mAh in last year’s Mi MIX to 3,400 mAh this year. Under the hood, the Mi MIX 2 has a Snapdragon 835 processor, 6 or 8 GB of RAM, and 64, 128, or 256 GB of RAM.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 could feature a 1,000 fps camera

snapchat spy no survey

Samsung is developing a new camera that can snap up to 1,000 pictures a second. The Korean tech giant is said to be moving through the testing phase and is on the verge of the mass production in November. This could mean the camera will feature in the Samsung Galaxy S9.

text spy online

So, how does it work and what exactly does it mean? Samsung is working on what’s called a “three-layered image sensor.” In a normal setting, you have a camera sensor and a logic board that is responsible for the process of taking pictures. The logic board takes the image passed through the sensor, does some math, and turns what you’re seeing into data to be stored on your phone. Samsung is adding a DRAM chip into that equation to allow the camera to capture video at 1,000 fps. That will rank up with Sony for the slowest of the slow-mo.

Speaking of Sony, it was the first company to commercialize these new three-layered sensors. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium features a camera that captures video at up to 960 fps at 720p. It looks like Samsung took notice. While Samsung looks to emulate the technology, the process by which it’s doing so is different. Sony’s process is cheaper and easier to manufacture, but it’s rumored that Samsung wanted to avoid paying Sony royalty fees for using its process.

Even though Samsung’s method will cost more, there are positives. Since Samsung is part of a conglomerate, it can get its hands on the chips it needs internally. This should decrease wait times and potential overhead. It’s also reported that Samsung’s process can offer better performance, though we don’t have specifics on that yet. The real danger for Samsung is the error rate in production lines. Since it’s working with a three-layer chip, if any of those layers are bad, the entire chip has to be tossed. And that can get pricey.

Samsung currently uses Sony sensors in half of its flagship phones. We generally see US models with Sony sensors while Samsung’s home market of South Korea gets phones with its own sensors. It stands to reason that we will see a US variant of the Samsung Galaxy S9 with Sony’s camera that can produce high frame-rate video, with other territories seeing Samsung’s new camera that can do the same.

HMD testing Oreo update for Nokia 8, will be released ‘when perfect’

facebook spy free download

The Nokia 8 was revealed last month with Android 7.1.1 Nougat on board. We already know that the device will be upgraded to Oreo, as this has been confirmed by the company during the announcement. It now looks like we likely won’t have to wait much longer for the update to be released, based on the images posted on Twitter by HMD’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas.

He posted two images of the Nokia 8 that’s just one tap away from getting upgraded to the beta version of Android Oreo. The changelog doesn’t list any of the features the update has on board but does reveal its size — 1.3 GB.

Unfortunately, Sarvikas did not mention when exactly will the update be released, but we probably won’t have to wait long based on the fact the beta version is already being tested. The flagship won’t be the only Nokia smartphone to get bumped up to Oreo, as the company has confirmed that the rest of its lineup will also get the latest version of Google’s OS.
